About the Artist

Photographer Frances Czapski was born and raised in the Detroit area but spent summers at her family’s cottage on Lake Superior, a few miles south of Whitefish Point, Michigan. At age 10, her family moved to Marquette, leaving the city life behind for the U.P. lifestyle. Frances fell in love with photography during her college years at Mount Mary College, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, developing film and studying dark room techniques while pursuing a degree in English and minors in journalism and music. Following graduation, she taught English in Germany, sparking a love for traveling and exploration that continues to this day. Her travels led her around the world and back to her home, northern Michigan, where she has settled in the rural village of Paradise. In the spring of 2021, she opened Photography by Frances Czapski - Gallery & Gift Shop in downtown Paradise. When she is not running the Gallery in the summer season, she is off exploring the beaches and forests of the Whitefish Point area, her eye forever behind the lens. She captures the details of Lake Superior as the light, wind and seasons shift around Whitefish Point.
